Hill country at the foot of the Strzelecki ranges

Norman and Julie Albutt's farm of 160 acres is picturesque country at Yinnar South and nestles into the foothills of the Strzelecki Ranges. Norm is adamant that the cattle he breeds suit the land that he grazes them on, and has chosen Red Poll and Red Angus breeders and bulls to interbreed to produce a cross bred beef animal called Strzelecki Reds. A dairy farming background enables him to inseminate also from a wide selection of bulls to complement his own. He has also introduced Maine Anjou and Gelbvieh blood. Norm believes the red polls are better milkers, but the Angus adds to the muscle to enable him to turn off prime vealers, or run them onto steers at 18 months.

Norman was born into a farming family but left farming to complete a degree in accounting - a profession he practiced for thirteen years - but with a twinkle in his eye he told me that as a farmer- if (when you scrub up) you don't get all the dirt out from under your nails, it gets into your blood and you eventually return to farming - Norm should know - this is what he did. Julie works "off-farm" as a Psychiatric Nurse 7 days a fortnight, but enjoys helping Norm when she can. Together they are committed to the environment and each year Norm. has planted trees, and now has implemented a plan to plan at least 50 trees annually. Apart from being totally involved in the breeding up of his herd, Norm has one other ambition - to own an old Jaguar car, so works 20 hours weekly at a neighbouring dairy farm, to promote community spirit, and help to finance his objective.

Describing himself as a hill country farmer, Norm also enjoys the communication available at the meetings of beef breeders' groups he attends, and to share ideas with other farmers - he sums his aims up thus " to perfect his breeding plan whilst enjoying his land, and to one day leave that land better than when he found it."
